Multiple Realizations

September 13, 2014

That moment you realize your bill is $42 and you didn't buy a darn thing..

I pop in (the store) for some water ($5), some detergent ($5) and then catch the Rolling Stone Mag with a Special Edition "Neil Young" out of the corner of me eye so I grab it.  While ringing up at the self-check I see People Magazine's Tribute to Robin Williams.  (Bloop).

<Finish and Pay>

$42.18

WHAT?!  Holy Sheeesh

As soon as I can get over my complete surprise I pull the People Magazine out of the plastic bag and notice the $14.99 USD stamp.  OY!  I quickly think about returning the item and begin to chuckle about the scenario I am in.  I then catch a glimpse of the gentleman who is standing next in the line waiting for self-check.  Age:  approximately 63.  Male.  Caucasian.  Mustache.  This guy is glaring right at me as I turn to him.  We are approximately 30 feet from one another.  It was at that moment, when our eyes met, that I knew that he had been witnessing my little episode over "my magazines."

How much did he see?  How much did he know?  OR, is he just waiting with great anticipation for the next available scanner?  I AM his best chance as the other two people that are on the other scanners were there when I started...hmmmmm

(pondering) Did he see me talk to myself?

(internally)  Fuck it.

I chuckle again.  I REALLY feel like saying something to him.  I proceed to "check-out" with slight reluctance, but not regret, about my purchase and he approaches as my receipt prints.  He waits while I assemble my goods and I say, "You're all set."  He replies with a hand gesture towards the screen as if to say, "It's still doing it's thing."  "No, it's ready to go.  Go ahead," I say but really want to engage him and let him know about my $42 experience.

Nay.  I did not.

We'll see how the reads go...
