Trap and Kill: 1 Opposition: Nil

The atmosphere around 211 Eighth Avenue was a bit different tonight (10-13-14), as opposition to the "trapping and killing" the aggressive coyotes in the area showed up to speak their minds.  The Seal Beach City Council meeting commenced at 7pm and speakers began at approximately 7:17 pm.  Those "listening" were members of the media: Channels 2, 9 and 5 were present.
A gentleman by the name of Randal Massaro, of the Union Members for the Preservation of Wildlife, started things off.  Mr. Massaro brought up the issue of what happens to a population of wildlife when the alpha males and females are killed off.  Studies have shown that the population actually INCREASES.  Mr. Massaro also stressed the importance of sitting down to really discuss the issue and save the tax payers' dollars:

"ask the other cities that voted to stay away from coyote killing.."

Mathew Duncan, of the city of Orange said, " statistically, in the United States, we have a grand total of 12 coyote bites.  In the U.S., we have a grand total of 4.7 Million dog bites."  This, he said was in response to a Seal Beach resident who said that it was "only a matter of time before a coyote attacks a person or a child.

Mr. Duncan proceeded to say that "this could be a defining moment for your city.  The City of Irvine has a page dedicated to Coyotes: Everyone's Goal should be to peacefully coexist with our wild neighbors."  When he added that someone from west Garden Grove was happy to have "wiped out coyotes" there was resounding applause from the audience.  When he mentioned being more like a progressive city, Irvine, the other "half" then applauded.  It seemed as though the room was fairly split on this issue.

Each person that spoke against the euthanization (GREEK: "good death") of the coyotes DID express their condolences and sympathy towards those folks that had experienced a loss of a loved furry friend, whom many of the speakers referred to as "family members."

A biologist, Lindsey, who had not intended to speak, shared with the audience that "trapping and killing" is only a short-term solution and there is much evidence to support that.  She had personally been a part and seen these examples first-hand in surrounding cities with similar "urban coyote" issues.  She said that the trapping and killing program may show signs of being effective, in a year or two..,just the biology of the species, you're going to end up with more coyotes.."  She went on to say, "they're adaptable and they have adapted to live with people.."  She also related the behavioral difference between a coyote in an open-space area versus the "urban coyote."  The urban coyote has adapted and doesn't show the same fears of humans as the coyote in open-spaces.

One speaker shared that this issue had been going on for nearly a year with numerous city council meetings and was a very difficult decision for the people and the city.  It was also mentioned that currently the State of California currently does NOT allow the relocation of coyotes.  If that policy was changed, the citizens of Seal Beach would champion the relocation of the coyotes, "but we are driven to this sort of desperate situation.."

An elderly woman with a floppy hat (photo) spoke for the proponents and may have stolen the show as she came to tears while speaking of the neighbor's dog who had recently been killed by a coyote and the "trauma" that the family and child had been going through.

When asked, by one speaker, "how many people in this audience  are here to support the mayor and the city council.."  The response was an overwhelming round of applause.

There was also Native American representation from the Apache tribe present that spoke out on the issue of interfering with the "natural order" of things.  "They were here first," said Sonny Eaglehawk.

Empty Cages Los Angeles was also present with their members and a speaker.  This is a group that has been raising awareness to this issue by protesting and educating people at Seal Beach pier in recent weeks.

The speakers present were approximately 22 ; 3 of those were speaking out FOR the "trap and kill" of the coyotes and 3 had other "issues" to speak about before the council.  The rest spoke out AGAINST the "trap and kill."  And, in spite of those efforts, the information presented by biologists, activists, and former law enforcement, the city council voted to KEEP the "trap and kill" in effect for another 3 weeks.

Although urban coyotes in the Seal Beach Community may be "trapped and killed" in the coming weeks, this ISSUE is certainly NOT DEAD...

Wile E Coyote

The Coyote "issue" in Seal Beach, California has hit another week and with another week came another demonstration.  On Sunday, October 12, 2014, several protesters from a group called Empty Cages LA were expressing themselves and raising awareness.

They were discussing the issue and handing out information on ECLA.  One of the members, on hand, is a Seal Beach Resident.  She informed me that the "trapping and killing" method currently contracted by the city is a program that is up for review after 2 weeks and that expiration draws near.

The goal of the ECLA is NOT to necessarily stop the current method of the "trapping and killing" but to re-open the dialogue with the residents of Seal Beach AND City Council about  long-term, sustainable, non-lethal ways to deal with the coyote issue.."
The ECLA is also looking at unused land in the Seal Beach area as a place where perhaps the Coyotes can go and roam.  I'm not sure "where" that is but there is certainly land around the area being used for things like this:

Man v Nature is ever-present.

During the discussion I had with the "demonstrator," someone mentioned that the Navy brought coyotes into the area because there was a fox problem. <--- Click for a story on the fox issue.

This issue has had more and more attention since inception and there is no doubt that tonight, at the 7pm City Council meeting (CLICK for MAP -->) LOCATED AT 211 EIGHTH STREET, SEAL BEACH, CA., there will be even more attention drawn towards it.  It should be interesting to see what both sides have to say and to see how things develop...

Until then, another "issue" is ongoing in Seal Beach that does NOT seem to get ANY protest and that is this:

Beer Can Beach? Seal Beach is Riddled with TRASH

ISSUES: Coyote UGLY?

Protesters gathered on Ocean Avenue in Seal Beach to express their displeasure with the City's decision to capture and euthanize coyotes that have been preying on the pets of residents.

Members of "Empty Cages LA" gathered and demonstrated with signs at the intersection of Ocean and Main on Sunday around midday.   Overall, it was peaceful and lasted approximately three hours, according to a source at the Police Facility.

Residents looking on remarked at how "this was an outside group," and that "no residents of the City were protesting."

This brings up some interesting questions: If a City chooses to handle an issue in a certain way that the majority of the City agrees with should it matter what outside influences think or say?  Is it worth the energy and effort to try to "change" policy as an outside influence in an area that is NOT your own?

It does sound like the coyotes have been a real problem in the area and many have lost their pets.  There have been discussions and meetings on how to handle this for the citizens of Seal Beach and the method of capture and euthanasia is currently being utilized.

The ECLA, clearly, have an issue with the decision to euthanize the captured coyotes, and are acting on their RIGHT to Stand Up and Fight whether the residents of SEAL BEACH agree or NOT.

Darryl Mapp did not belt out any Bob Marley but he did sing a number of Beatles tunes, including "Hey Jude," while playing the keys approximately 60 feet from where the protesters were earlier in

the day.  Another "issue" surfaced.  This time it was between Mr. Mapp and his band and the gentleman who "hammers nails into his tongue."  Now, I'm not sure if THAT is true, but I did see a man, with a hammer, and a chain and he was looking to entertain folks near the Seal Beach Pier.

He just happened to NOT be entertaining anyone while the music continued to play, and had a little bit of an ISSUE with THAT.

ONE thing is certainly TRUE:

ISSUES: We ALL have them.  Some of us ADMIT to them and some of us Fight for them or against them, but we ALL have them.

Evray Buddee Funee

A good friend would say often,

"Everybody funny. And, you funny too.."

I love that saying.

It seemed all to familiar.

Genius.

Then, one day, you hear it on the radio: Bass thumpin'.  Drums jamming.  The high hat hitting crisply and quickly. George Thorogood waiiling.

It's funny what can impact a person.

Cheers.!  To good Friends, Bourbon, and BEER!

6 Degrees ...(of self?)

Do you ever notice how things change meaning over the course of time?  Did your mom or dad have a saying that at one time meant something so near and dear to your heart yet later in life those same words had new meaning?

When I was much younger, like 5, 6, and 7 years old "younger," my mom would say to me,

"If there were 6 more just like you.."

Sometimes she would lean in and say it with the warmest and most glowiest smile ever.  Sunbeams DaNcEd. Animals running all around.  It was like a magical circus.

Be still, my heart.  I would float after hearing these words.  MY MOM loves ME sooo much that SHE wishes she had 6 more JUST like ME!

I would elate.  Smile.  And then, after a few moments on Cloud 9, I would wonder about the math involved.  You know, the multiple of 6.  And, I would appreciate this WITHOUT knowing and comprehending the magnitude and impact of having sextuplets.  Sextuplets?

But then, a few years later, when you're a bit older those word are spoken again.  But, this time, those words don't feel all warm and fuzzy.   They take on a WHOLE new meaning.

With a tone inflection, a sort of scorn and a slight furled brow my mom utters,

"If there were 6 more JUST like you.."

Two things come to mind:

1) It's NOT what you say, it is definitely HOW you say it.

And,

2) Be Careful WHAT you ask FoR!

B good

Shanghai Express

99838-97269.jpg (230×173)
I forget to look UP sometimes.  Today when I did that I was reminded at the register that "we" were in the Express Checkout Line: Must Have 15 items or Fewer.  The lady in front of me remarked about the 15 items and it got me to thinking...

Does that ever get enforced?  I've never seen it.

<guard enters the line>

<arm bar ensues between "guard" and customer>

Customer (Frank): Whoa, What's going on here?  I mean, that arm bar seems a bit harsh!

Guard: <loosens grip> Well, sir, we ARE going to have to ask you to kindly step over here, sirrrr.

Frank: Kindly?

<slam>

Guard: We're going to have to keep you in this temporary holding "room" for about two hours.

Frank:  Umm, well, that's a little strange.  I mean, I have to take my kid to soccer practice.  Isn't there like less of a penalty for first-time offenders?  I mean, I've seen drunk drivers get treated better than this?

<Thinking...>

Umm, I need insulin?

<2 minutes later>

Frank: Ensure?!  You're giving ME ENSURE!

Guard: And a bologna sandwich, sir.  And a bologna sandwich.

Frank: Alright then..

Next time I'm just gonna split my groceries into two purchases

Nascar, Budweiser and George W. Bush?

To some, these three things might go together like PB, J & .. M?  (Peanut Butter, Jelly and Marshmallow cream).

What?  Never tried it?  Well, that was my shiz back in 1977-79.  Boy-OH-Boy!  Mmmm Good!

Ok, you get the point.

And, perhaps a "judgement" is made on some level.  Now, some people get all uptight about the words "judgement" and "judgemental."  However, as people, we ALL form some sort of an opinion and often times those opinions are directed at others whether they be good OR bad.

So, like it or not, there are people in the WORLD that do like all three of these: Nascar, Budweiser, and George W. Bush.

And, clearly, there are those that like PB, J & M.

kraft-jet-puffed-marshmallow-cream2.jpg (320×320)

Perhaps therein lies part of the problem in the US of A.  Now, I'm not saying that on one end of the spectrum you have Nascar and Bud and on the other you have a sandwich.  My point is this:  we all like our own thing.  We ALL have our own opinions, our own values and our own perspective.

Somewhere along the way these things evolve.  A genesis takes place whether we want it to or not.  Systems, powers, people and advertisers may affect the ride we're on.  Communities, teams, churches and pastors may also play a part.  Emotional turmoil, tragedy, the human condition and behavior.  There are so many factors in one's own experience and journey that make-up the individual.

SO, why does our current system boil down to a choice right out of Wonderland?  A scene from the Matrix?

Red (pill) or the Blue (pill) ?

matrix-red-blue-pill.jpg (604×720)

Is everything so black and white?  Is YOUR life that easy to break down to "this" or "that?"  Really?  Ok, perhaps that is the case..

I contend that life is more gray.  Has more details.  And, sometimes requires more information to make an informed decision.

So, if someone believes in "choice" they're a Democrat?

If someone believes in the Second Amendment they are a Republican?  Ok, if they believe in bearing arms, own a gun and a member of the NRA they are , without question, a Republican?

Well, certainly if "they" like Nascar, Budweiser AND George W. Bush!

Judgement.

Maybe.  Maybe Not.

I, for one, want to live in a world where someone is "pro choice" AND is a gun-toting NRA member who's president is Charlton "from my cold, dead hands" Heston.  RIP.  Where someone likes Nascar, Budweiser, Bush AND PB J & M!

Gray?  Color?

I don't know, but not Black, White, Blue, Red.  IS this truly an expression of Freedom?

America, clearly, enjoys their pills.  I'm just not so convinced that there is mass satisfaction with the Red or Blue options.
